Home Place Hardwoods  Native Hardwood Lumber from Edgewood, Iowa

White Elm Lumber  (Proper name is American Elm) Ulmus americana

Mature White Elm trees are somewhat rare, due to the continuing plague brought by Dutch Elm Disease.  But here and there we have trees that have reached considerable size before dying.  Though White Elm is considered more or less of a weed tree, I think the lumber it makes is especially beautiful, particularly if it has had a chance to rot a bit.  Since I only harvest Elm trees that have died, and White Elm seems to start rotting unusually soon after it dies, what we have for sale is just a bit rotten.  This brings out subtle shades of color and texture in the wood - I think it really has the potential to make beautiful projects.

Item #47

These are six boards from a large beautiful Elm.  It died several years ago, and it sat a few years before I harvested the lumber.  I cut the main part of the trunk into 8' boards which are still in the drying shed.  This set of boards came from a smaller chunk of the trunk.  They are all in sequence, and run from one side of the center of the log to the other, creating a beautiful pattern.

Length  50"   Width  11 1/4"   Thickness  13/16"- 7/8"

Price  $ 630

Item #50

Spalted/rotting White Elm -  seven very pretty boards with variation in color from decay. The right-most board was surfaced, click on the thumbnail to see how the board looked before and after.

Length  52"   Width  12 1/4"   Thickness  7/8" - 17/16"

Price  $ 450

Item #51

Pair of bookmatched White Elm boards, these too have some degredation creating beautiful and interesting patterns.  I have surface-jointed one side of each board, to better show off the wood.

The top 1/4 of the boards may not be very useful to you, since it's a big knot that wouldn't be structurally stable.  If desired, I'll be happy to cut off the ends and prorate the price.

Length  48"ish   Width  12 1/2"   Thickness 1"

Price  $ 140

Item #52

These two were the next-door neighbors of the boards in item #51.  Pretty nice boards, though the top ends are a bit wavy due to substantial non-uniformity of grain.  These have staining and degredation, (Beauty-Rot), but no spalting.
