Black Ash Lumber Fraxinus nigra

Black Ash has beautiful grain, it is darker than it's brother White Ash, but much less dense. The lumber we have available for sale was harvested from Desolation Forest in 2012, when this forest area was cleared for an Oak regeneration project. We don't have any trees that are needing to be harvested or large enought to be harvested in the near future. Lots of nice young trees, but I'm fearful they will all be killed by Emeral Ash Borer - some trees on our land have already died from this.

Very nice group of 6 boards all from one log, giving an interesting progression of grain patterns from one board to the next. They are generally flat and straight, some rough spots and imperfections, some boards have a bit of bowing.

Five pretty nice boards, showing some sticker stain. The series of horizontal stain marks about an inch wide, spaced evey foot or so are called "Sticker Stain". They were created as the boards were air dried, resting on "stickers", which are thin spacer boards that promote air flow and uniform drying Sometimes they create superficial staining. It should easily come out with a bit of sanding. Or, leave them there for that "just unstacked" look!

Very nice series of 10 Black Ash boards from the same log. As always, this creates a beautiful mutating pattern as you look from one board to another, this seems to be especially true for this species. I wish I'd have sawed them a bit thicker and ended up with just 7 or 8 - they are a bit wavy. Click on thumbnail to see for yourself.
