Home Place Hardwoods Native Hardwood Lumber from Edgewood, Iowa
Black Walnut Lumber Juglans nigra
Black Walnut is the King of Eastern Iowa Hardwoods, and for good reason. It is a beautiful, fast-growing, rugged tree, it's an important food source for charismatic mega-fauna (white-tailed deer), and meso-fauna (red squirrels). The lumber is highly sought-after because it is easy to work, is durable, and has beautiful natural color and grain. Walnut is the most prevalent tree species on our land, despite generations of high-grade logging prior to our ownership. We have lots of beautiful Walnuts that would be economically appropriate to harvest, but we are leaving them alone. Plus, several areas of excellent Walnut regeneration with trees 10 to 30 years old. For now, the Walnut trees we harvest were in the way of a better tree, or were storm damaged, or growing into a fence. Or just pissing me off. ( kidding! : )
