Home Place Hardwoods Native Hardwood Lumber from Edgewood, Iowa
Sugar Maple Lumber Acer saccharum
Sugar Maple, aka Hard Maple, is not exclusively found in postcard depictions of Autumn in New England. It grows just fine here in the Upper Midwest - our woods have quite a bit of it. It isn't as highly prized for lumber production as other species such as Black Walnut or Black Cherry, and it doesn't provide as much benefit to wildlife as many other native tree species. So, sometimes our Maples find themselves on the wrong side of the chainsaw.
Much of the lumber we offer for sale is stained or spalted, which is a nice way of saying it is rotten. Or heading that way. Actually, we think Maple lumber with some degredation and defects is prettier than "unspoiled" Maple. But you will have to judge for yourself!

Item #46
Four boards from a nice Maple tree growing on the southern edge of Scot's Oak Garden that had to come down because it was was shading an excellent stand of young Red Oaks. I cut the trunk into 4'6' segments, and left them on the shaded forest floor for 2 years, covered with leaves and twigs, in an experiment to facilitate spalting. As it turned out, the ends are a bit spalted and a lot rotten, and the rest of the boards don't have much special going on. So chalk this one up to experience Maybe you can find a home for these boards.

Item #48
Series of 9 big thick boards cut from a Maple that used to live along the northern edge of Slippry Footings forest area. It was girdled in 2008 to make room for an Oak regeneration project. I harvested it in 2014 when it was starting to rot. As I hoped, the boards have pretty nice spalting. Please browse among the photos linked to the thumbnail.

Item #49
Seven boards from the same tree that produced item #48. These boards are from the next log segment up. Here too, nice spalting in many areas, dramatic variation in color/texture. Some of the wood is quite nasty and punky/rotten, but overall, very beautiful boards, waiting for the right project.
