Home Place Hardwoods  Native Hardwood Lumber from Edgewood, Iowa

Red Oak Lumber    Quercus rubra

We don't have a lot of mature Red Oaks in our forest, none are in need soon of being cut down to help other trees.  Though Red Oak lumber isn't as highly valued for woodworking as White Oak, it is a great tree to have in your forest - provides lots of habitat and food for the proverbial forest creatures.  We have a few areas with excellent Red Oak regeneration, including Scot's Oak Garden, Scot's Oak Garden South, Rainbow Forest, and Rainbow Hill.  Plus some Red Oak are coming up in our 5 acre direct seeding project - Parker's Folly - as well as in the forest improvement areas - Slippry Footings, Inter-Putt-putt Forest, and Infra-Putt-Forest.  What little Red Oak I have cut up fell from the neighor's land across the fence onto the meadow known as South Boob.

Make no mistake - these 4 boards are completely dead.  Some areas are well beyond dead, in fact beyond rotten.  But, they are quite beautiful, in a bug-eaten way.  Please note the pair of bookmacthed boards.
